An installer cut a 28" by 28" whole in new drywall for a recessed medicine cabinet in my remodeled bathroom. I was unable to get the medicine cabinet and instead am getting a smaller one. If the whole that was cut out is replaced with drywall and recut for the smaller cabinet will it be noticible where the first cut was repaired?

You can do an excellent job of matching. My drywall is finished with a pattern, so when I need to remove a piece for access, I cut it out with a saber saw. The key to getting a good replacement job is to support the piece so that it is absolutely flush with the rest of the wall; that is best done by using cardboard or wooden spline strips glued to the back surface of the intact drywall. The piece can then be glued or spackled back into place. In your case, it will be a bit more complicated in that you will have to cut a new piece to replace the section that was removed; cut to size, shape with a file (some edge gaps are okay), and stick it into place. Use spackle or drywall compound to fill the cracks; sand and repeat as for a new installation.

Go ahead and cut the drywall until you can hit a stud. Then you have something to anchor the drywall to that is solid.

Once the drywall is up then lay down a layer of joint compound and then lay down some drywall tape over that and run another layer of compound over that. Let it dry and sand smooth, now add another layer of compound and feather the edges and let it dry. sand smooth and prime and paint.

you need to find the studs, where dry wall seams together, then replace the whole piece, then cut a new hole.
