It's a 5 speed and does it in all gears, but only sometimes. Also for my last 2 oil changes, I started using a synthetic blend, and on my most recent a full synthetic (castrol 5-30W) was this a good thing? I don't use cheap gas (well anymore than I have to) and use an additive in my gas to keep the fuel injectors clean - should I even be using additives? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I just had this problem on an old GM truck. My fix was the fuel pump.I would try to accelerate and it would fall flat on its a$ $.It would always hesitate on take off too.Your local mechanic can check to see if your fuel pump is putting out the right amount of pressure.it is very easy to to.When i tracked this problem it took me over a month to diagnose it because the check engine light would not come on because of it.Check the fuel pressure. If your fuel pump was bad, your vehicle would still run but not have the power it used to have.

Change the fuel filter and clean fuel injectors (do not use the gas additive for them it gums up your fuel filter) buy the spray cleaner for them: take your hoses off your injectors: follow directions on the can. You should use Mobile 1 10-30W oil (best on the market) it does not brake down as easy and you don't have to change it as often. 5-30W is to thin for your car. Use STP it is a good gas additive. Just follow the direction. I hope this will help. If you have looked for the fuel filter under the hood but it was not there check under the body it should be on the drives side close to the out side edge below the door. It should look like a mini oil filter kinda.

Your oil choise is fine. Cheap gas??? do you mean the octane rating? You are actually best off with the lower grade, unless the engine requires premium fuel. Higher octane gas is slower burning gas. OR If you mean the brand, Top tier is preferred.
Fuel Additives, it matters who you ask! I like Berrimans B12 (Walmart, autozone) but not every tank. Its pretty good. I'd say do it every 15k to 20k miles.

Now back to your problem, do a full tune up. If you still have a problem, try seafoam. (Carefull!) It will clean the carbon off the combustion chamber and valves. After that it could be one of the sensors. (IE O2)

It may be the timing chain is 'stretched', since the car getting alot of mileage on it by now.If you can put a timing light to it and the timing marks looks as if they are jumping around, replace chain. If not familiar, get to repair garage and have it checked for 'Basic Timing" This will be the true timing for that engine. The mechanic their should be able to give you an answer and you can take it from their.Cause to me, it definitely sounds like the timing chain is worn and stretched.

it sound like you take good care of your car. keep doing what you are doing. the problem sounds like one of your sensors are bad. you could try to get a code reader at the auto parts store and see if you can pin point which sensor, or take it in to a mechanic and him check it out. all of the extra things you are doing to take of your car has nothing to do with the problem you are having. and the 3.8L engine is a very good engine, regardless of what other opinions are posted.
