Most doctors are glad for moms to breastfeed atleast the first six weeks but recommend that you breastfeed for the first 12 months.
I personally breastfed my daughter for 11 months - it is really up to you.
You may want to talk to your pediatrician about it because if you do decide to wean, then you will need to switch your baby to formula. Whole milk isn't recommend until 1 year of age.
You may want to try your baby on a bottle of expressed milk, my daughter never would take a bottle no matter who gave it to her.
Good Luck - Hope this helps!

It is said that babies should be totally breastfed upto 6 months. Thereafter, solids are introduced. It is upto you how much and for how long can you breastfeed. Mothers milk builds up immunity of the child. You could continue giving one or two breastfeeds after 6 months. Its your decision.

As with most parenting issues everyone has strong opinions about this but you need to listen to your own parenting instinct and do what's right for you and your baby. The longer you can breastfeed the more your baby - and you - will benefit. But if breastfeeding is making life difficult for either of you then you should consider mixing breast and bottle or moving over to formula entirely. You don't have to go 'cold turkey' all at once.
If you're enjoying breastfeeding, keep it up. You will both benefit from this most natural of activities.
Best wishes.

I breastfeed my first for a little over a year and my second for a little over 8 months and according to peditricians between 7-9 months is sufficent but breastfeed as long as you can. However, my personal belief is past 2 is pushing it!

well, since even the mainstream AAP says that children should nurse for AT LEAST ONE YEAR. And the WHO says two years. And tens of thousands of years of human evolution say that weaning age for humans is actually between 4-7 years. You should at least go to a point where no formula is needed.
Human children need full-fat milk for optimal brain development, so it might as well be milk from their own species!

Ideally, nursing should continue for at least 2 years.
But i understand that alot of people arent comfortable with that.
So, the next best thing would be to nurse for the first year, so that you never have to switch to formula.

The amount of time depends on the needs of the mother and child. Not on what socieity deems acceptable.
