Any bulletin board system, Myspace at the fore front now, is a breeding ground for stalkers.
As early as 1993, there were people who found ways to utilize mudds, moos, and other bbs systems to stalk people. It is usually not someone who knows you but rather someone who imagines that they know you, someone who makes you a central fantasy and becomes obsessed with what they imagine as a relationship with you.
Myspace is an advanced form of the bbs system, one that allows photographs and personal information to be relayed to the largest number of people at the same time. Myspace is more dangerous than many of the other "friend finding systems" that are out there because there are few if any blocks and safety procedures through Myspace.
Studies are now being conducted specifically concerning the ease of access of information through Myspace and the dangers that it conceals. The recent case of murder in Hawaii involving Myspace is one example of the danger that such a system encourages.
after all, it is anonymous and easy.
Now as to whether it is really good to be on there? I think so. For my purposes it is. I have access to my freinds and family through an easy medium that allows me to share recent photos from my journeys abroad as well as updated news and events to everyone at once without the pain of doing a mass emailing.
However, I never post anything that I don't want seen by everyone in the world, because it is entirely possible that it will be seen by people I wouldn't want to have it. No personal data that I might be uncomfortable with, no photos that reveal personal information.
And it takes less than two seconds to make it private.

That being said, it can still be dangerous.
remember...
always practice safe net!

It doesn't have to be that way. My wife and I have a MYSpace page however, we have the settings so that no one can contact us or post anything without permission from us. Only our family and friends have access to it. If you set it up with the privacy settings and keep it as a place for people you know to communicate with you, then it's perfectly safe. It depends on how you use it.

Just with anything or any outlet in life, just be careful.

Personally I think you'll be ok on MySpace as long as you're smart about it.

The quick answer is: if you are paranoid about it, then just don't do it. For most people, it is a place for friends.

You can set your profile to "private".Then only people you allow on your friend list can view your profile.
