I know it's probably one of the best things we can do for ourselves, but I sometimes feel that I'm thinking about the past or planning for the future without living in the now.

Can you tell me how you live for the moment? Any advice on enjoying or savouring each second would be appreciated, especially when it comes to doing things that aren't so fun. Thanks!

This is a great question☺

For me, it's helpful to just take a second and realize that the mind is at it again: past/future thoughts. This slight awareness gives you a breather--you take a step back from the crazy mind. Then take a slow breath and really feel the breath(this can be a reminder to get present).
Look around and feel what is happening in your mind and body. See the colors around you, hear the sounds...no striving...just settling into what is already here...

Also, when doing an activity, really practice engaging your senses 100%. When drinking tea, really taste it....when eating, chew slowly and savor the taste...or taking a shower, feel the water, etc. Try to feel more and think less. The important thing is to not try and make the moment other than it is....squeezing the juice out of the moment is just enjoying it, without striving for anything special...

...it's the simple things: laughing with friends, reading a good book, looking at the stars, etc. whatever simple things a person enjoys---that are enough in themselves....the memories that are special to me are always those simple moments...

It's a toughie to live in the moment when doing things that aren't fun! When I'd rather be on a beach or in the woods or anywhere else. lol.

I just try and focus on the task at hand and keep doing one thing at a time...and try to find little creative ways to maybe make it a little easier..or at least a little more bearable. lol.

Best of luck to you. I hope this helped a little.

:D

It is very easy. I live for the weekends. i like to go to the ocean, I enjoy going to the movies. I make no plans for my weekends, no grocery shopping, no work, no even clean the house, I try to do everything during the week, so in the weekend I can truly say I rest and live. If I feel like walking, I just do it, if I feel like going to the bazaar, I just go. I love the ocean and I try to go as much as I can to listen to that heavenly sound, I even have a cd of the ocean in my car.

I can relate to what you said, we always think about the past and what we should have said or done, or we say : as soon as I... I will.... we forget that we are living right now, and this very second is the one we should enjoy.

Take care, hope you have time to relax. Greetings from Baja!

I don't live for the moment. I live for the future. It totally sucks. Hope you find a way to appreciate the present.

"enjoying or savouring each second" seems too much of a demand. Just set some goals and work toward them. Otherwise you're a useless dreamer.

I am just learning it myself...:-)
My method: I close my eyes for some seconds...open it slowly, ...then look around and note what I see..then.the sounds...the smells (I try to choose a pleasant place for this). I am trying to perceive things that I usually ignore, overriding the feeling that I am wasting time, or what would somebody say if they see me goofing like this.
Then put the impressions together into one "picture" like a present time memory, and find the beauty and/or joy in it. (e.g. the sight of a letter that brought me good news for joy, or the way my cat jumps around for both joy and beauty, or the fragrance/taste of the mango on my plate.
