The league has a rule that bans public criticizm of the officials. All who do are subject to a fine. The league also will not allow officials to be interviewed. This is supposedly to draw attention away from the officiating, but if there is a bad call, it's going to be everywhere. I think what they are trying to do, is keep everybody's focus on the game and the players, not the officials.

I think they get punished for the way they react to a bad call. If they get too upset and lose control, the player or coach gets punished for disrespecting the official.

Some calls are bad; however, MOST calls get questioned, good or bad. It is part of the coaches' jobs and it is overdone. Gone are the days of sportsmanship, and the coach screaming and carrying on is akin to the manager in wrestling screaming and carrying on.

Punishment comes when players and coaches "cross the line"

I totally agree with you. Especially in Football this year. I got so sick of watching the VP of officiating Mike something or another every week on the NFL network come on and try to justify why the call was correct. He would always start with the same lame opening. I used to love watching Rich Eisner at those moments because he would set up questions and catch Mike basically looking like a fool. He would just shred him. I just wanted Mike to admit just once that the wrong call was made. Just once. Be a man and admit you made a mistake. I hope they don't put it in the terms again so I am forced to watch him every week trying to lie and justify why the call was made correctly.

well it could turn into a form of intimidation if they let em argue calls then it would eventually turn physical.nick van exel went after a ref in a game, sprewell choked his coach,a high school wrestler head buts a ref and knocks him out, then the ref hit that guy on cleveland on accident and the guy wants to beat him up.if they have a problem take it up with the powers that be and if theres a problem suspend him or fire him.dont forget don cheney threatened to kill john calipari for complaining to the refs.

I think that coaches should have the ability to critique the officiating. The NFL is a big baby when it comes to this.

when a wrong call is made the head of officiating does write an apology to the team the call went against.....in the AFC champ. game last season he wrote a letter to the patriots for the DPI call against Hobbs....but not alot of people ever hear about that
