Hello. I live in Montreal since August last year. Now that the winter is [almost] over, I see a lot of trash (mostly cigarette butts) appearing in places that were covered with snow before. I don't like seeing the city as dirty as it is now. I have never lived before in a place where it snows, so I wanted to know if the city will be cleaned and when do they usually start cleaning it. Montreal is a wonderful city, but seeing it like this really makes me sad.

Yes, you know spring is in the air when you start to see all the cigarette butts, and the dog poop starts to thaw out and smell up the area!

A lot depends on the part of the city as to actually how clean it will get and how clean it will remain.

As another person mentioned above, the city will only actually do a cleanup once the snow has pretty much all melted.

What they do is send a road-cleaning vehicle with its rotating brushes to push the dirt under the center of the vehicle and a large vacuum then sucks it all up into the belly.

In parts of the city where crews put down salt and sand mix, it gets very gritty and dusty for the first couple of weeks of spring, and then it will get cleaned up.

Parts of the city (like Westmount) do this type of cleaning on a regular basis (weekly in summer months) to keep their burroughs clean. Other parts of town may only do this once or twice a year.

Montreal is a very clean city. The cigarette butt issue is because they started a new law about non smoking bars, clubs restaurants etc.. last May. So people are now smoking outside. Don't worry they'll figure out a way to clean up, I mean this isn't the states or anything.

I'm a Montréaler but have an American lover and travel there a lot. Let me tell you that post-snowmelt Montréal is INCREDIBLY CLEAN compared to what you would see today in snowbelt American cities like NYC or Boston!

In any case, as you should be able to interpret from the street signs the spring-summer-fall street cleaning schedule starts in a few days on April 1 although because of possible April snows they really do not do exerting cleanings until mid-April.

They usually wait til all the snow melts before starting the cleanup. I would give it a couple of weeks but the city will eventually do its spring cleaning, don't worry about.
The dirt ( and the mud smell) are all part of the montreal spring experience...enjoy! :P
