Montana. His legacy was built on WINNING the Super Bowl, not just GETTING there a bunch of times.

Elway without a doubt.
Physical QB skills advantage Elway.
Total wins advantage Elway.
5 Super Bowl appearances advantage Elway.
Elway was 2-3 in those 5 SBs but he carried 3 marginal teams to the SB on his shoulders alone. Montana was a great QB, one of the Top 5 ever but he played on some great teams almost his entire career. Montana on those same 3 marginal teams that Elway took to the SB would not have done the same.

Montana, absolutely. He was a much better at leading his offense. Elway had a better arm and was a better runner, but being a quarterback is about bringing your team to victory and Montana brought his team to 4 Superbowls and won them all. Elway was also a great QB, but Montana was the best of his era

Both QB's brought leadership to the table. They were strong armed though Elway was stronger and more mobile. Montana throughout his career was a better reader of defenses and won more super bowls as well. Both to me are in the top ten all time great quarterbacks with the edge going to Montana.

Elway definitely had a stronger arm, better running ability, and was better able to improvise. Montana had better vision, a more accurate arm, and better leadership skills. The differences in the two are very small. I would like to know if Montana would have been as successful in Denver. A lot comes down to the people they played with. When it comes down to intangibles, I think Elway has the advantage. He had the ability to play injured more often, and had to basically build that team's success on his own, whereas Montana had success designed for him.

Joe Montana controls Elway for most of the match, but Elway makes a comeback in the 4th round and wins with a submission (Kimura).

Silly question, obvious answer!
Montana is the greatest of all time! Not just me saying it, 90% of football comentators and historians agree (the ones that don't live in Denver that is!)
Montana was the greatest from Day One, as a rookie! Elway while a truely great QB his whole career, only discovered what it REALLY takes in his last two years!
That being said, in the end, these are two of the greatest QBs the game has ever seen..............

Joe Montana is a better QB. Many forget that "The Drive" was not in the Super Bowl, which Montana won 4!!! He also won 3! Super Bowl MVPs. He is probably the greatest of all time.

John Elway! He holds many college and some professional records, and was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame as the only quarterback to have started in five Super Bowls. Proud Coloradoan.
