How does a fabric softener sheet, put into the drier, actually "soften" the clothes?

Do the sheets damage the fibers and shorten the life of the clothing?

when the dryer sheet heats up it coats your clothing with wax and fragrances which helps rid them of static and wrinkles and they actually do damage your clothing and can also harm your skin but it happens very slowly.If the thought really buggs you there are some alternatives that do work well one is a rubber ball that you can throw in with your cloths and there is the organic laundry sachets which are awesome they aren't cheap but they last through 24 loads you can get them on amazon.com.

Fabric softener makes your clothes come out of the dryer with less wrinkles. Towels are softer too. The sheets do no damage at all! My clothes last forever it seems.

The sheets just are a buffer like a towel in the dryer. I dont use them because most sheets are made of fats and this could rub on to your clothes causing grease marks which would be a pain to remove since there was heat exchange involved in the dryer.

as another person already said its an illusion. most fabric softeners are in fact toxic. some even contain formaldehyde. although there are alternatives. i use a device called a laundry-pure it eliminates your need for the fabric softeners as well as detergent hot water and bleach. oh and it is also environmentally friendly.

the fabric softener is a fragranced animal fat product usually, it transfers a minute ammount to the fabric thus slowing down the problem with static cling, it doesnt hurt the clothing at all.

it doesnt actually soften it, but it gets beat across the clothes and the sent is left on them. thats why you use a softner in the washer, like downey.
