Normally I don't like to give just websites as an answer... but that's what you're asking so, so here you go:
http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory.php I've had problems with it being down lately, but it has always opened evenetually. HUNDREDS of free patterns organized by category.
http://knittinghelp.com/knitting/free_patterns/ Mostly how-to videos on how to do various knitting techniques, but also contains a few free patterns.
http://knitty.com A knitting magazine that contains many modern patterns.
http://www.lionbrand.com/content-knittingPatternIndex.html You have to register (for free), but they have a wide variety of patterns
http://www.magknits.com/archive/ Another online knitting magazine with free patterns.
You can look on most yarn brand websites and they will likely have some free patterns. Also you can google "knitting magazine" and probably find a couple more with a bunch of free patterns. Many knitting blogs also contain free patterns that the blogger wrote themselves. There is a huge variety of websites out there if you just look.
