i drive a 1993 ford mustang. i believe the steering is going out. whenever i turned the wheel to the right and come back to straighten the wheel, i can hear something in the front end "pop" sounds like some of the bushings are bad or something but i figured it would be a good idea to go ahead and change the entire steering system which is rack and pinion. i wanna do it myself and was wondering what the difficulty of this would be. and also are there any kind of special tools i might need.

This can be difficult. It would also require a re-allignment of the front end once it is done. If you do not have a good work space to do the job then I would not recomend it. Normal tools will do the trick on this job. It just takes time and the ability to pay attention to details. I would recomend getting the chilton or haynes repair manual for you car to help you with the R&R. It would be best to make sure you have all the needed parts availble as well other wise you may find yourself with out a car for a week or so if they have to order something in.

I own a shop, changing the rack&pinion for no reason is a pretty stupid idea. You should identify what the problem is before you dive in head first. Anyway, changing the rack will be no problem, if that is what you choose to do. Straight forward job with a few rack bolts, power steering lines, outer tie rod ends and so forth.

Good luck.

The Popping noise you are hearing can come from many of the moving parts in you front end suspension and not necessary from the rack and pinion.Have you car looked at by a repair garage first. Then you can take it from there as to how it will be repaired.
