I'm new to basketball, but it looks like 16 of 30 teams make the playoffs, which is a much larger proportion than in the sports I have followed for years (baseball, football).

Isn't this too many? What's the reason?

More revenue is right, but probably ranks as "pretty friggin' worthless" if you really want to know.

All those teams in the playoffs give teams and cities a chance to get excited for basketball. The playoffs are a fresh start after the season and it doesn't matter if you are 8th or 1st, you've got a shot. All those fans rooting for teams in so many different places means more money for the NBA in general.

My problems with the the increased number of teams stem from baseball - Brave's fan - for 14 years the Braves had the best record in the division, many years the best in baseball, but the playoffs make all those games pointless. I also get mad with the giant layoffs they take between games. Basketball and baseball should be played tourney style ala NCAA. (Day after day too, not a game and three days off.)

So that there are more teams to display and to have a longer playoff series. If there were four teams it would be over like that. But having a lot of teams lets you spread over a whole month.
