I would get Vista and save it until you decide to upgrade. XP is still a great platform, and MS will have a bunch of fixes and updates for Vista in the near future, so when you decide to go to Vista, it will be more stable, or even with SP1

Go ahead and get the upgrade. You do NOT have to install Vista right away, you can wait till this fall. Thats the time frame I recomend for installing Vista. They won't have all the bugs worked even then, but they will have most of them fixed. I recomend that you upgrade from 512mg to at least 2gb of memory. If your Acer lappie had DDR2 memory, they are now making 4gb kits (2gbx2 sticks)

Upgrade your RAM anyway, 512 is just the bare minimum you should have. The more RAM you have the better your comp will perform.
XP is going to be around for a long time, so there's no rush to upgrade...Vista is still too young to jump on right away.

Getting it is a good idea . As long as it is setup successfully , you can always turn off the bells & whistles and ensure that it does not gobble up a Laptops limited resources.
I have been using Vista for a couple of weeks now , am more than satisfied with the performance and the several usability benifits are well worth the investment

Don't get vista yet. Vista has lots of bugs and many driver issues. It can't even run iTunes without faults (aero-glass gets turned off and vista home premium gets set to vista basic properties). Overall, just don't buy a computer yet because greater technology is coming up for all computer parts. Wait patiently, you won't regret it!

Heck yeah get it. It's actually very cool (if your video card is up to snuff), I've used it since RC1 and it's been very good (just like 2000 and XP were).
When you get the disk, feel comfortable installing it. You'll hear a lot of nay-sayers, but I love it.
