For FILM auditions (especially in Los Angeles) does the actor read from a script or does he do a monologue? I am talking about the first audition before a call back.

They almost always have you read from the script. They let you prepare with another actor for a few minutes or they may bring you in and have you read cold. They almost always give you at least a few minutes to look over the scene. Ask questions about the character if you are confused.

Most of all, be yourself. You do that better than anyone else.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to sound harsh, but whenever I hear an actor ask a question like this I say the same thing: If you're even asking this, you are not prepared for the competition you'll be facing in higher profile auditions.. Many professional actors have several monologues prepared before each audition, some have pieces they've been working on for years, DECADES even. (Think about that..) I recommend no less than 2 or 3 contrasting pieces prepared, a song, a joke, and a vocal and physical warm-up before hand. Be prepared! Sometimes a director will like your look for a certain role, but they can't tell how you would fit from the monologue you're doing... So they may ask you to do another one. If you can't show them your the best person for the job somehow, they may just forget about you. I agree with the person above, too.. Contact them and find out if it's a cold read. If it is, ask if they have sides available. Brush up with friends on your cold-reading skills..
btw Break a Leg!!

it is really different everytime. I have been doing auditions for years and it changes from the directors choice... if there is a specific audition you are thinking of doing dont be afraid to call and ask... truth is for the LA interviews there are many people auditioning so it will mostprobably be a piece that they will give you but be prepared and ask away! JUST MAKE SURE TO BE DIFFERENT dress in differnet colors or wear your hair in a unique fashion to set yourself asid from all others

It can be both. It will probably be a script though. You will usually get the sides the day before so you can go over it. Although sometimes you'll have to "cold read."

For on-camera auditions, it's much more common for actors to be given "sides" (i.e., excerpts from the script) to read.
