You are probably adding too much rice. Try the Doctor Brown's bottles as they have Y cut nipples that are designed just the purpose of thicker formula (added rice). I work in the NICU on rotation and we tell our parents when they are taking their baby home (because most of them are prematue and have a malformed pyloric sphincter causing reflux) to put in 1 teaspoon of rice 4 ounces of formula to start out. This also what we use when feeding them in the NICU per the neonatologists request. There is nothing wrong with it as long as it is not too thick. Some of you people don't even realize some of the things you think are so bad and say that doctors tell you not to do are being done by many doctors in hospitals. Oh the things you find out when you work in the medical profession.

I started feeding cereal to my son this way. I used Dr. Browns Y-cut nipples. I added 1 tbs. to 1 1/2 tbs. per 4 oz. bottle. It was just a little to give the formula a little more "substance", but not so thick that it clogged the nipple. I didn't start until he was 4.5 months old. Then when he was 6 months I gave him cereal with formula or breast-milk with a spoon. It was messy but it got him used to being fed this way. Be careful feeding him cereal too soon. Can cause tummy ache and gas.

First off, Congrats on your baby! I just became an aunt a couple of months ago and it was one of the happiest days of my life. I cannot wait til I have kids of my own.
For your question, you kind of have to see what works best. It depends on the type of nipple, bottle, formula, etc. If it is too thick, try adding a little water, but not too much though because it will just leak out and leave all the air inside, which can give your baby gas.

My son doc. put him on rice cereal at 2 months. And he told me not to put it into a bottle. He said to feed it to him with a spoon.Cuz the rice is much thicker and it can get stuck and the baby can have a hard time eatting it when it is in the bottle. I started with a lil rice and more formula so it is kinda soupy and put it on a spoon.then you can thicken it up as he gets use to it.My son is just 3.5 months old.And he is onto babyfood like carrots and bananas. but he still eat rice. He get 32 oz of formula a day and still wakes up at 12:30a.m to eat a 6 oz bottle.

There is no way to make it any better. The problem is that cereal was not made to go through a bottle nipple. This is a bad habit to get yourself into. If you are feeding him rice cereal, then you should consider doing it by spoon. Using a good reclining chair, like the car seat...place a bib on him and a towel over him..helps in the clean up process. Get a deep baby spoon and feed him...it will only take a few times and he will get the hang of it, with less mess each time. You will thank yourself in the long run not to start this habit of food in his bottles. Good Luck

With this For my neice we watered it down a little more, and try to mix it very very well basically we kept on shakin till we couldnt nemore lol.
Cuttin the nipple bigger is just ganna give him more at a time and may cause him a tummy ache, or make him spitup.
Just try daluting it a little more. It worked for us

Did your doctor recommend this? Baby's tummy is not going to be ready at 3 months of age and will not digest cereal. Most doctors and books I've read recommend starting cereal at about 6 months or later.

please do not feed the baby cereal in the bottle. it is a SERIOUS choking hazard. your pediatrician should have told you this. secondly, 3 months is way too early to be feeding the baby cereal. this is one of the reasons why babies are so dangously fat. what are you rushing for? just give the baby formula for now.

you have to use a certain kind of bottle made for that .. the nipple hole is bigger and you can add enough formula to make the rice go through fine..
