I agree with the majority of the answers you've already had; I bought a really expensive steam cleaner and I never use it. It was useless for cleaning carpets. I then bought a Bissell carpet shampooer which, although still quite expensive, I've found pretty good for carpet cleaning. You can also use it for cleaning upholstery and I think you can clean hard floors with it, though I've never tried. It's an upright machine, which is much less tiring to use than a cylinder cleaner. I don't know how the results compare to hiring a machine or having someone in to clean your carpets professionally.

I think renting is the best option.
I rented one at the weekend from a dry cleaners and it did a pretty decent job (although it did leave the carpet wet for a couple of days - so beware if you're planning on doing the whole house!)
Although the cleaner you've found sounds cheap you have to watch out for the cost of the detergent - it's usually pretty expensive.
If you're renting one try and strike a deal whereby they include some detergent or ask to buy two litres of cleaner for the price of one. Good luck!

I had one, and they're ok for doing stuff like blasting grouting clean and stuff, but for carpets, are pretty useless. They're fiddly to use and only clean a tiny area at once, so a whole carpet would take you hours. The steam cleaners specifically for carpets that you can hire from Dry Cleaners are pretty good, but for really effective cleaning, get someone in with a proper industrial machine. I'd save your £25 for something else if I were you - mine stayed in a cupboard for about 5 years before I finally threw it out.

I have rented them several times for my carpets, but found that for a really dirt carpet or kitchen carpet with some grease on it use Dawn dish soap instead of the steam cleaner shampoo. You will have to buy the defoamer to keep the suds down.

The kind you rent or can buy at a store get the carpet too wet and dont have enough suction to pull the water out of the carpet. You can rent a commercial strength machine at most janitor supply stores or you should hire a professional.

Yes, they're working. Also, they are very practical , inexpensive and simple in use. Here, in Greece there is a really cheap steam cleaner that costs about 20EUROS. They are cleaning a big variety of objects...carpets, leather couches, valances and curtains, they are also dust plants and finally they renew and oxygenate the air!

steam cleaners are really good.
but the one in woolworths isnt a proper one and would be suprised if it did the same job as a proper one.
they are very deer but you can hire them at hss, which is a hire company and they really do work.
it would be cheaper to buy one but for a decent one your looking about £100.
just be better to hire one every month- not too expensive
