Ok rent on a private 1bedroom apt will set you bak 1k a month almost everywhere in California. If you can't budget this in, look no further.
Certain places that are great to live, such as Berkeley, CA, rite outside SF Bay area (beautiful place; perpetually sunny and has a great view of the bay and the Bridge), are very expensive for rent; $1500 for a 1bedroom. However you will soon discover that living in these places can be surprisingly affordable as you have little or no need for a car and great quality food is available untaxed and really cheap from local groceries. Also, restaurants in the UC Berkeley area are delicious and cheap.
There are locations that are cheaper... if you are a big outdoors lover I would check out Tahoe City - backwoodsy and great for snowboarding, mtbiking, kayaking, hiking, whatever... and rent is actually cheaper than some others at $900 or less for a 1bed. However, food is MUCH more expensive as the place is somewhat remote.
Use this website to check out the price on rent in tha area:

It really does depend on where you live. It's expensive in San Francisco. People have moved from there to where I live because it's cheaper here. Only thing is now every things going up here because of the population explosion. I live about 60 miles North of San Fran. A 1 bedroom apartment here is about $900 a month. That's considered a cheap apartment. Houses for the cheapest are about $4oo,ooo and that's for an older home.

San Diego is very expensive. Apartments are about $1,000 a month for a one bedroom. The salaries do not compensate for that either. The weather is great, but......
There are other parts not so expensive and hopefully someone here can help you.
Ignore the Compton suggestion. That is just mean.

Southern California and the Bay Area are very expensive.
Northern California and the desert are less expensive but it is hard to find work.
Anywhere near a beach is super expensive

I live in San Diego...am a single mom to 4 kids. Its VERY expensive! Gas alone is 3.13 a gallon...thats what I paid today. Rent is up there and groceries are slowly going up as well. I am barely making it meet. If you are seriously considering a move to Cali I would look at Central or Northern Cali.

The rent in LA is going higher, just to let you know. I mean, appartments are going to about $1,300 just for one room. But these new appartments have the best in it. It seems like now they are putting hardwood floors in them and what not.
Now we see more lofts and condominiums in Downtown LA more thatn ever.
But there's a problem dealing with this situation, though. But I rather not go into detali with it. I guess if you have money, you shouldn't have a problem. Peace.

Where do you live now is some information that would be helpful. You might live somewhere where the cost of living is actually higher. And in california there are many different areas with many different costs of living.
