Years ago, I was living in a samll town in Mississippi when a guy down the street did just that - went up in flames and smoke on the driveway with thirty people watching. They never did find the cause and I have never heard of someone offering an explaintation of how or why this happens. There have been a number of cases where there were witnesses to what happened. The guy in Miss had nothing left of him but a pile of ashes. The local coronor said it looked like he had been cremated the job was so thorough.

People do not suddenly burn on their own.

But three things coming together can make it look like that.

There is a flame to start a fire next to the person.
A person dies or is unconscious so they don't try to escape the flame.
The person is wearing clothing that can act as a candle wick.

Then the person can be burned up very slowly and at very high temperature so the burning gets to down to total ash. Strangely enough the burning can leave bits completely untouched so you might get an arm or a foot intact afterwards.

Yes, there was an old lady that combusted before she went to bed. It was in the early 1900s.

The housekeeper smelled something but dismissed it.

Yes, but it is not big poof. It's slow smoldering heat inside out. People have reported smoke coming from their skin and did not have full blown combustion, but mild burn out of the blue indoors.
I think most who die from it die in sleep. May be try drinking lot of cold water. Who knows.
