I think he'll be just fine if he has been raised right. Lots of people have parents that have made bad decisions yet they don't go on to commit those same mistakes. Instead of worrying so much, count your blessings! He's smart and does well in school! Don't worry about the no regard for truth, lots of kids go through that stage and he'll grow out of it just fine (eventually.)

How do you know this boy? Are you a member of the family, a CPS worker, do you want to adopt him?
It sounds like you have a sociopath in training here. I don't know if you can turn him around but whatever is influencing his behavior to be a liar and a manipulator should be removed from him if at all possible. He's only 8 so I don't see why he couldn't be influenced towards better behavior and attitude if given the right environment.
Your description of him sounds like it is more serious then "just going through a phase". If you can influence him or remove him from his destructive surroundings you would probably be doing him a huge favor.

Criminal behavior is not inherited, it's a learned thing. Lots of people have criminals for parents and don't end up in jail themselves. It's all about choice. Sometimes having very little pushes people to achieve more than what their family members have. If you see signs of trouble, you can always sign them up for boot camp or a Scared Straight kind of program. A life of crime isn't glamorous at all. They need to see the reality of being in prison. It's not cool and there's nothing fun about it. Having most of your rights taken away doesn't make you a rebel, it basically just makes you a loser who can't live in society unless someone is watching you and telling you what to do.

Sounds like either extremely rebelious (possibly due to strong feelings of resentment?), or, very possibly has brain damage (beyond the scope of the following article).
