I was walking up to a gym for PE, when I noticed there was this house along the way, and there were four sets of two bricks, standing up tall, and there was a piece of wood laying over the bricks. There were four chicken, each with one leg tied up to the wooden board above each thing. It was sad and disgusting to look at, my mom said we could report them, under animal cruelty. But we never did. What were these people doing to these chickens? And was it animal cruelty?

[sorry if this doesn't make sense.]

All of my friends were mad, the chickens are now gone, so right now we can't report them. but, I am still stuck as before, I wasn't sure if it was animal cruelty, or if they were getting ready to eat them. But some people did say, even if they were going to butcher them, it's still animal cruelty. The people were probably Filipino, if that helps. it was in a Filipino neighborhood. Would this not be considered as animal cruelty in Maui as other states? THANKYOU for answering my question, those of you who did.

Someone asked if it was on cement or grass? I dont see how that would matter, but there was grass and dirt.

OOOOPS!! I forgot to say, for some reason there were water dishes. I'll try to take a picture next time.

We were going to report them, my mom said it was OK. But I didn't know the number, and I forgot, then 2 days later it was gone.

Based on your description this very well may be a sign of cruelty. You should always ask yourself a few questions when considering if something is considered cruelty or not.

- Was there adequate shelter for these animals?
- Did the animals look like they were in poor physical condition
- Does the area that they were kept in look clean and cared for, or neglected and dirty
- Was there a good supply of food and water available to the animal(s) in question.

If you're still unsure as to whether these animals fell into a neglect/cruelty charge, there is no harm in calling your local SPCA/shelter to have someone investigate.

Part of an ACO's (animal control officer) job is to inspect the living condition and health of the animals in question. They will determine whether or not to file charges based on their results.

Even if they found that this wasn't a case of animal cruelty, there is no harm done in reporting something that doesn't seem right to you.

I've posted a few helpful links that help to define what cruelty is and what to do. :)

Hope this helps!

You didn't say if there was grass where the bricks were or cement. It could be that the people had the chickens for future food and didn't want them wandering off. It doesn't sound like they were keeping them for eggs or they would have been penned up with a place to lay the eggs.

I think that this is a clear case of abuse. Don't question yourself when you see something that makes you feel uncomfortable. If you see an animal in a situation that you think is inappropriate chances are your gut instinct is correct. If in future you find yourself wondering if it is the right thing to report a person for their care of their animals always err on the side of the animal. If you are wrong, then there's been no damage done. But if you are indeed correct, you have done a wonderful thing by helping the animal/s involved.

It doesn't matter if they were going to be slaughtered for dinner anyway. If you take the responsibly to buy an animal you need to make sure its well fed , and well sheltered.
Even if the were planning on eating them you should make it as painless as possible.
Look in the phone books , and you will find a local ASPCA or animal shelter and give them a call.

Hi Lauren,

Yes, you should report them. It sounds horrable! I am an animal lover as well, and it hurts to see animals suffer in that way. Yes, It is animal crulty.

Im not sure what those people were trying to do, put I have a feeling it was not a kind-hearted intension.

I hope I helped, and best of luck,

Elsie

What you are describing may be a variation on housing "fighting chickens" or Gamecocks.
Look at this link and see if you might have seen something similar.
The roosters are tied by one leg to their shade houses and are fed and watered daily. Keeping chickens in this manner is not illegal but in some states fighting them is.

They sound like gamecocks and they are probably dead by now. Unless you live in one of the 2 states in the US that allows this, they need to be reported to authorities as cock fighting is illegal in 48 states. People who keep chickens for eggs don't tie them down.

I have blended thoughts about animal cruelty. i'm desirous about preventing cruelty at the same time as it is composed of drowning kittens and clubbing seals, and beating doggies. yet no longer a lot at the same time as it is composed of swatting the biting flies, poisoning the fleas on my canines and burning lime ailment wearing pricey tics off of my young children legs...

omg that is total animal cruelty. just think of how those poor little chickens must feel. there are regulations for this sort of thing. they should be able to live a happy life even if its a short lived one. please do something about it.
