Im currently employed in a trade, and like any trade you have your ups and downs, lately i've been in a down stage, so i've been looking for employment elsewhere, i know i have the characteristics of a good employee, and know that i'll get hired, but the place i've been working at is family owned, been approached by a company that i know i can settle down and make a carreer out of, work is more stable and secure and is salaried based, am having a difficult time making my mind, any suggestions would be great thanks.

Is it your family that owns the business? It sounds like you want to have security and hopes of advancement. If you do not have it where you are then take a chance with the other company. It is always a little frightening to change jobs and even change professions at times sometimes it works out well and other times not as well as hoped so one moves on. Very few people stay forever in their first job. Just as we go from class to class in school we go to more advanced employment with time. Good luck.

I am in a similar position right now, and I can understand your loyalties to the company you are currently with. I have struggled with this decision for 18 months now because the owner of the company I work for was diagnosed with cancer and had to leave for medical reasons for an extended period of time. What I have finally realized is that if he is truly a great person, and I believe he is, he will wish me the best when I pursue other employment, because he understands the opportunities I am passing up or have passed up to stay with him even though he has nothing else to offer me. I would take the other job if I were in your shoes... Good luck!

It may sound elementary, but make a pros & cons list. Think of everything... distance, money, potential, happiness, opinions from your significant other or family, etc...

The main thing I hear when talking to unhappy employees is that they are bored or don't feel that the position is going anywhere. You need to decide whether you want a career or a job. A career can be made in any field, but a job is just a job.

How vested are you in the company you're in now? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I know my answer isn't definite, but hopefully it will inspire you to ask those tough questions.

Best of luck with your decision!

Well i think you should see if you can get the other job first.

You know make sure you are hired and then quit the other job even if it is family owned. The other job seems way better than the job you have now but at the same time you don't want to blow it with the boss you have now because if you weren't to get the job then you would be jobless. So first before quitting anything make sure your hired then quit. Basically what he said.

If you are in a down, and this opportunity looks like an up, I'd take it.

Now if everytime I think about the new opportunity something makes me really nervous, I wouldn't burn any bridges with my current boss, in case things don't work out.
