Help with sims 2 xbox?

Question

I was playing sims 2 but seem to have gotten to a point where I can't advance (but I know I haven't finished the game because I have not got access to all possible locations yet). Does this mean I have to just keep playing and eventually it will let me move on? Or have I missed an essential move and am now stuck? Thanks
