I tried watering more, watering less, more sun less sun, fertilizer... nothing seems to work. It seems pretty much toast at this point, but not being a green thumb I am not really sure!

First I suggest going to the book store and see if you can find a book on the care of bonsai.
Go to a good nursery and take the tree with you. Ask if there is anyone who can tell you how to care for it. (Save time and call first to see if there is anyone there who knows something about bonsai.)
If your area is large enough there might be a Bonsai Club there. If you can find their number or find the location of their meetings they would be the best people to ask. Check with other gardening clubs to see if they know of a Bonsai Club in your area or if they know anything about bonsai themselves.

Usually it needs to be watered only a little every 10 days, so if it started to wilt within a week maybe you overwatered it.
I'd take it back to where you bought it and ask for their advice, maybe they'll exchange it for a healthy one. You can but try.

I'm sorry to hear your bonsai plant died, but not surprised. My husband is fascinated by these, and everyone he has bought has died. I suspect these plants are newly rooted cuttings, not hardened off, and sensitive to any change in their environment. Below is a link that may answer your questions. Check the MAINTENANCE section, and good luck.

If you still have the receipt from the store you got it from. Most will let you return it if its been within two weeks of purchase. That shouldnt have happened to the poor tree. Its not your fault, it was already sick when you got it.
