Shyness is a direct absence of Self-Esteem. If you are a true good friend to him, then teach him about this basic principle first. Most people will resist the idea of loving themselves because they don't know how to laugh at themselves comfortably. So they come up with lame excuses like, "I am not handsome enough," or, "I am too fat," or "I don't think I am interesting enough," or "I am not smart enough," etc.etc..etc.etc..... You should teach him how to laugh at himself and how important it is to appreciate the positive side of his life. Once this is achieved, you will be surprised how quickly his shyness may disappear.
