what O.S would be good to install in the comp?

Buy at least two hard drives! Partition one into two = partitions, Install WIN XP first and in the other install VISTA!
Do purchase a VERY GOOD power supply!

To place Active@ KillDisk Pro onto a floppy disk type the following at the command prompt:
COPY G:\KILLDISK.EXE A:
COPY G:\DOS4GW.EXE A:
The above assumes that the G:\ drive is the bootable CD-ROM drive and the A:\ drive is the floppy disk drive.
DOS4GW.EXE is a required file for Active@ KillDisk, Active@ UNERASER and Active@ Disk Image.

You can get Windows Vista Ultimate for about $180 if you are building a new computer. Available at Frys.com

XP is available for about $10 from Amazon. I great deal on a stable and common platform.

Linux (like Ubuntu) is ok. Not bad for free, but just seems like it's really "lacking something".

Since you are building it yourself, I'm guessing you are trying to save money. If so, I'd investigate the Linux distros, in particular Ubuntu.

Windows, bought in the shrink wrap, may very well cost more than the computer you are building.

I would start by asking what you wanted to do with the comp and how familiar you are with anything other than windows.
