I love that city so much! It breaks my heart that our country's priorities are so screwed up.

Because we are dealing with a government that spends $80 million dollars investigating Clinton, and only $3 million (later, more money was literally begged for to bring the total up to $14 million) was spent on investigating the attacks of 9/11. George Bush not only doesn't care about black people as Kanye West so boldly put it, George Bush does not care about ANY people.

There was a news item on CNN yesterday that showed huge piles of rubble in a junkyard from New Orleans. The work is so overwhelming that it will take 10 years to clean it up. Also half the population has moved from New Orleans. It's hard for the government to bulldoze homes when they don't know if some of them have been abandoned or not. I have a friend that lives there. He and his wife has decided to stay in the area. (He's a science teacher). He got a federal grant to re-build his home, and he said it's way beyond the price needed to do the work. Other people are fearful of gang violence and increased major crime rates and don't want to face that either. Shoring up the dyke system is the most important project the government engineers have to do before cleaning up all the destruction. Unfortunately, it's going to take years to finish. We also have to remember that Mississippi was also hit very hard, and that Florida was also a victim of several hurricanes. Also parts of Texas were destroyed by Hurricane Rita. I've been there and have seen the total destruction of towns on the coastline. All that's left are frames where buildings and homes once stood. I think the government is trying to do all it can. It's going to take a very long time to fix, and it is still a sad situation.

Why does New Orleans expect the government to do everything for them?

The worst hit areas of Mississippi were rebuilt quickly and efficiently. Why? Because the people in those areas stayed and rebuilt themselves. Yes, the federal and state governments helped, but the local citizens took care of themselves and made sure the job was done quickly and right.

Certainly not all, but many people from New Orleans still haven't returned. So much for love of the city. Certainly not all, but many people are sitting on their collective asses (including the city government) waiting for hand outs and free rides.

If you love your city, rebuild it already. I'm currently in Houston. Our crime has sky rocketed since Katrina. I was a volunteer here in Houston. I have met many people who came here after Katrina. I'm friends with several. After all that, I cannot honestly say I know a single person from New Orleans who is going back.

Why isn't the government doing all it can? Why aren't the people from New Orleans doing all they can?

I am sick that they built this city below sea level, I do not think that the Government should invest any more money in a city that will end up being flooded out again. Why should the rest of the people that are smart enough to build on high ground have to pay such a high price because of this large city that is in a flood zone? My Next question is why should the Government be expected to always pick up the pieces of everyones problems? When we have tornado's that level peoples homes, farms, kill their livestock, destroy their crops, etc. we help each other out and we also carry insurance. I would suggest that the people of New Orleans look at the end of their own arms if they want a helping hand. They also need to buy their own insurance so the the entire country does not have to pay for them. I became angry about the situation when they were asking people to go down there and cook and clean for the people, my question was, why don't the people that are just laying around cook and clean for each other? The other time I became angry was when our Govener offered up a bunch of jobs, for the people of New Orleans to have if they moved to our state, but NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON CAME!! It made the news that no one came to take the jobs, they were quoted as saying they wanted to hang around and get money from the government. I have no time for lazy people or people that expect the government to do things for them. I think as Americans we need to do for ourselves. Our taxes are so high because there are such a large group of people that like to take from the Government and give nothing back. It is not fair to those of us that work hard to be self sufficient. We should NOT REBUILD A CITY THAT IS BELOW SEA LEVEL AND AT RISK OF BEING FLOODED AGAIN. I understand that you may love the city, but it is too high of a price to pay for a city that is below sea level. I would support it if they moved New Orleans to higher ground and the people all came together to help rebuild it. But Don't expect others to do it for you.

Sometimes someone will give a starving person some fish to eat.Sometimes someone will give a starving person a fishing pole and teach them how to fish. Our Government gave too many People in New Orleans fish when they were hungry instead of giving them a fishing pole and teach them how to provide for themselves. Now that the Government quit giving them the fish the people of New Orleans needs to pick up a fishing pole and start working so they can feed themselves like the rest of us do.The Governments only crime is making a welfare state out of New Orleans by depriving it's citizens the ability to support themselves. So the best thing anyone could do for these people is show them how to take pride in who they are by carrying their own weight. If it is at all possible to do this I might add,it may be too late for that concept to register with them.

Do you believe in global warming? I don't believe it's caused by man, but the evidence concludes global warming is real. Kind of pointless to rebuild New Atlantis, don't ch'a think? I think the people of New Orleans should rebuild New Orleans if they want their city to return to its prior state. New Orleans needs to help itself. I'd rather not help fund an underwater diving attraction for the state of Louisiana.

We have spent billions on katrina recovery.
Entire businesses have sprung up to assist with the clean up.
Homes are being given to so-called "victims" of katrina, and they are being sold immediately and the recipients take the money and move away.
People who were no where near the gulf are filling out claims for assistance.
It has recently come to light that many officials in charge of the recovery effort are using recovery money for personal items and lavish vacations.

Plenty is being done. It's just going to take time.

Lots more has been done than for any other storm victims in my memory. Hurricane Carla victims lost a lot but no government credit cards for lap dances,etc...No free rent and extensions of free rent, SHEESH.
Not possible to do too much for SOME who have no self pride or independence. Relatives usually put you up for a week...then you go back and plastic your roof, etc. and stay at home. You fix what you can until insurance is paid.

It's not the governments job to hold the hand of stupid people who live in a city that is below sea level and next to the sea that routinely gets hit by hurricanes. If they want to live there then they need to accept the responsibility of their stupid decision.
