There is no second language in Mexico City. All signs in the museums and all public places are in spanish.
In Mexico City, nothing run by the government (even museums) make any attempt at communicating in any language other than spanish. However, businesses almost always have someone who speaks english. Young people (15 and older) are sometimes suprisingly good at english.
If you are polite, almost everyone will attempt communication if you ask. Learn some spanish and most will find you charming :)

If it's not English then I'd guess Nahuatl, the Aztec language. I'm just guessing though. I've spent a lot of time in the Yucatan and Mayan is many people's first language there so I'm guessing that Mexico City may be the same in the sense that it would be a first nations language.

Number one language there is Spanish. Number 2 is Nahuatl (mostly poor people) and number 3 is English. Most people that speak Nahuatl speak spanish so you probably wont realize that the Nahuatl speakers are there. Mexico city's population seems to have lots of native descent.

Hi, I'm mexican and in the capital they only speak Spanish.
There are palces for tourists or that kind of people like hotels, restaurants in nice zones that speak a bit of English, but I can't assure you can survive in that city with no Spanish.
But don't worry, the city's really cool. U should come.

there have been many ethnics communities (mazahua, maya, otomi, mexicas, and so on.)with their very own customs and extremely own language, undergo in ideas that Mexico have been larger than now Im unsure how many diverse dialects are actually like fifty two or sixty two with their editions are like 150, there are various communities that still speaking dialects and that they nevertheless in a reasonably close society.(like tzotziles in Chiapas) yet another are very small and that they might dissapear. The SEP (public preparation secretary) edits books in dialect for some communities yet purely in trouble-free college.
