You should definitely have something from Public Enemy just so you can hear Flava Flav. I'd suggest something from "It takes a Nation of Millions..." or "Fear of a Black Planet"

Also, go with Ice Cube and/or NWA. I personally prefer Cube's solo stuff to the NWA, but that's because I could never stand Easy E. Also, Ice T had a few good hits. Now, that's all "old school" but it's also leaning towards gangsta. If you want more dance or party music, the list above with Young MC and LL Cool J might be more your thing. Oh yeah, finally, someone that I always thought was kinda underrated was Eric B and Rakim. They had some stuff that was ahead of it's time and just never seemed to take off.

You absolutely have to have lots of stuff by A Tribe Called Quest. Still the best hip hop I've ever heard.
