Yes, a lot of hispanics (mexicans) call our kids papi or mami as they should call us, it's just a nick name out of love, I call my son "apacito" or "apa" which would be papacito or papa, among many other nicknames I have for him.
Not to be confused for when we look at a very cute guy who is a papacito or guys calling a girl a mamacita.

Hispanic people in my neighborhood (men and women) call me 'mami' all the time and I'm not related to them nor am I anyone's mother. It can mean baby, honey, sweetie, sexy, etc.. It's just a term of endearment or a friendly term for the person they are speaking to.

I am not hispanic...and often when my 3 girls were little I would often call them to attention by saying "momma". Mostly because it is a recognized name in the relationship...and often the most commonly used "name" by children. I don't think that this simply a one culture habit. My day always referred to me as sissy...I am not his sister...but my brothers always called me that and I always responded to it. If and when you have children ..you might find a "bullet" name or term of affection for your children. It really is just a family bond thing.

I agree with Pico. It's sometimes used as an affectionate way to relate with kids, friends and family members.
