Apart from the choice of vehicle, the most important thing is the proximity of an authorized service center near you, your choice of a bike is greately reduced if you do not have an authorized service center in your town.
Another factor is the bike capacity, normally bikes begin at 100CC, and you can find models of 125CC, 150 CC in commuter bikes, ie. the bike that is used for day to day work. Those who want spotry kind of bikes have many choices in 150 CC and above, currently you can choose from 180CC, 200 CC and 220CC (that is Hero Honda Karizma)
You can find a list of popular bikes, and their websites for detailed info on the link below

Dude..Im an Indian..I wanted to purchase a bike two weeks back and posted a query on yahoo answers. im lean and slim.
Considering that we share similar qualities, go for my advice.
you go for 125cc coz its an executive segmenet. it goves you a right mix of power and mileage. Also its pocket freindly.
Best in 125cc is Suzuki Zeus. Since you are new to bike driving, Zeus would be very very useful coz it has got
Ultra refined engine with Xtra Tourque technology. This would help in the vehicle not stopping in traffic due to wrong selection of gear.
And one more feature is Gea rShift indicator that allows you to see if you have changed the gear correctly or not.
I was new to driving two weeks back but trust me i faced no problems driving in city traffic thatnks to zeus.
Zeus is a perfect fit for you.

HELLO,you should do some research before making any purchase on your motor scoot, HARLEY DAVIDSON IS KING but you may want to look and see which type of motor cycles you can get service and parts the easiest imports sometimes prove to be a big mistake,oh! and they are all to be respected as dangerous machines, that's why they all are known as MURDER-CYCLES!if your a light weight go for a sportster ,or a mopehead /spree/or ????play it safe and buy a bicycle!
