I don't just use one tool. I compose in Cubase, then put all the tracks together in Reason. Then I record all the tracks as samples using Sound Forge. Finally I edit the whole track from the samples using Acid Pro. I record as samples as it easier for me to play live like that, for which I use Reason.

What type of comp or laptop are you using because if its a mac then you can only using Logic. If you have windows the rest will do Acid Pro in my opinion is for mixing not Producing. Fruity Loops is good to use and cheap. But not 2 many functions.
Cakewalk haven't heard of it. Reason haven't heard of it either. Pro Tools in my opinion, is really good. I've used it whenever I've produced some music and has never failed me expensive but worth every buck. Hope it helps.

I mostly use Fruity Loops. I use Battery sometimes. It really all boils down to the plugiins you are using more than the Sequencing software. I usually mix and master in Tracktion.
