I mainly write and I have very basic guitar skills ( like six chords). I'm not incredibly serious right now, so I don't want to spend a bunch, but I want to come up with a "skeleton" for songs so I can try to match music with the lyrics?

THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF DIFFERENT SOFTWARE OUT THERE. THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO IS GO TO A GUITAR CENTER AND ASK TO THE GUYS THAT WORK THERE. MOST OF THEM ARE MUSICIANS AND HAVE EXPERIENCE IN THIS. I ALSO RECOMEND YOU TO BUY A MAC IN CASE YOU DON'T HAVE ONE. YOU DON'T NEED THE LATEST MAC BUT A APPLE G4 WITH 1GB OR MORE IS BETTER. JUST GO TO GUITAR CENTER AND CHECK THE MACS AND THE SOFTWARE.

a pencil and a pad of paper. this allows the process of writing music to stay personalised. and you can auction them off after you hit it big!
