I have looked over every occupation known to man. I'm not interested in teaching though I love art. I could work in an art museum but it's very very far from me as I live in a small town. But again it's not something I REALLY love. I love animals. Not wild animals but domesticated. And I don't know if I have the knowledge to go to college to be a veterinary technician. Don't they learn hard maths and sciences? My brain is better at the language arts side of the spectrum. Spelling, reading, and I could do well to brush up on my grammar. But again I don't want to teach. I don't care how much money I make as long as I am happy doing what I'm doing but I'm so unsure as to what to do. Would it be stupid to get a regular job and take some time to decide? By the way I am seeing a Psychologist because my self-esteem is quite low and I don't get very much social interaction. Any advice on what to do would be helpful.

I went to vet tech college at the University of Maine in Orono. A 2 yr program. I am a complete idiot in math, though not too bad at science. I had a bunch of great prof's that helped me understand the small amount of math involved. You can also take tutoring and there is a lot of help available at college you just have to ask. If you graduated from High School you can do this course. Keep up with the counseling, that helped me get through too !! Good Luck ...you can do it !

If you can get a "regular job" that provides decent pay, that might be a good idea for a year or so--but only with two conditions attached.

First, since you know your goal is to continue your education, set up a budget and put as much into a college savings account as you can from every paycheck. College will be expensive and if you already fight with issues of confidence, the last thing you'll want to do is enroll in school and be stressing about money. If you can create a financial cushion then once you start school, you'll be able to focus on studies. And you'll be proud of yourself for that accomplishment.

The second condition is the assign yourself the task of continuing to actively research to discover your best education and career goals. Is there a career center you can use to do some initial testing and further define the skills and you've already mentioned? After that, you can do alot of research online to learn more about various career options. As ideas start to become more concrete, take a deep breath and contact people (locally or maybe in other areas where you could visit family) and make appointments to talk with them about the specifics of their jobs and how they prepared for the job. That will help you in pinpointing career possibilities but it will also help you in interacting with other people, because it is always easier to approach and talk to someone with questions about common interests.

Become an investigator in your small town and find out what people really do when they leave for work each day. I bet there is a greater range of activity than you initially suspect. You might also do some volunteer work, maybe with a local animal shelter, to get a better sense of which of your interests are for fun and which might really provide great career options.

Good luck!

First, just relax! It seems to me that everything always has its way of working it self out (I sound like your grandpa). In my life it has but it's an ongoing thing. Also your not alone, by any stretch of the imagination. There are tons of peeps who are trying to figure out what to do with themselves, their careers, whatever, me included. The important thing is to just get your college degree, that will open doors for you. That's the thing, you never know what tomorrow will bring...or what door will open. Good luck
