Yellowstone National Park. The oldest, the best. Yogi bear lives there!

The back country at Yosemite, in central California is awesome. Enter the park from the east (Nevada Side). It's less crowded and just as scenic.
Around the Grand Tetons/Yellowstone, be prepared for unbelievable crowds. Jackson Hole is too expensive. Try staying in Eastern Idaho (across Teton Pass, or to the north of Yellowstone. I really like Bozeman, Montana.
On the east coast, try the Outer Banks in North Carolina, and don't forget Ocracoke Island. If you're a sea level type of person, you'll really enjoy that.
The biggest thing to remember about planning a vacation though, is to keep the itinerary as loose as possible, and relax. Otherwise the stress of trying to maintain a schedule defeats the purpose of going on vacation.

Yes, definitely the Mountains of North Carolina. It's really pretty and just a few hours away are beautiful beaches so it's more of a two for one deal.

West Virginia there are plenty of all the above there and its more affordable. You can be anywhere in the state in 2 1/2hrs. Plus the added white water rafting.
