Can you put programs on it and then use them just by plugging in the hard drive?

Absolutely. It will run the programs you install in any computer, with a comparable OS. Plus you can record music and video to other computers, as well.
Be virus care full scan the files going in to the portable drive, before loading the in to it. They are a potential risk of viral infection transmittal. Hope this helps. Will.

Its not quite that easy. Some programs (called stand alone programs) will simply be installed on the external drive. You will be able to use these on any PC that you plug the drive in to. More complex programs are installed into different areas of your windows system and some of the files may be anywhere on your internal or main drive. In this case, the programs will only run on the particular PC that they were installed on.

only if the program doesn't rely on the windows registry. most all programs need to be installed and therefore rely on separate files that wouldn't all be located on the external. example: you can't install a game on your external hard drive and then expect to play that game on a computer that doesn't already have that particular game installed on it.

Depends.

Some program (usually big and complicated like photoshop, coreldraw, some games) needs some registry to install to operating system, its unmoveable, so you cant use an external drive for those programs.
