Hello JD,
Please mention what car you are having and the problem seems to the idler valve which control the flow of fuel to the injector or carburater. The idler valve shud open slightly even though if you not pressing the gas pedal which makes the engine idling.

90% of the time Its either fuel or electrical problems when a car wont start.

Check the battery even if you suspect its not that, make sure it has proper voltage and amperage.

If you don't have any electrical power at the battery then charge up the battery and have the alternator tested.

If you are hearing a clicking nose when turning over the ignition and the battery and alternator are both fine then try pulling the starter and have it tested.

Check that you are getting fuel through the fuel lines also. If you have no fuel at the carb or injectors then replace the fuel filter. if a new fuel filter does not do it then pull the fuel pump and have it tested.

Its better to test things you suspect are bad then to throw money at the problem buying parts you dont need. Labor and testing parts cost nothing but time!

Not enough information and not very clear. What car make, year, model, is it American, English, Japanese, German. Australian - - -

You are saying the engine runs for a few seconds after starting, right? If it is an older car with a single ignition coil it is possible that the ignition ballast resistor has burnt out. This is switched out of circuit while cranking but cuts back in when you stop cranking. If it has burnt out the ignition coil receives power as the engine is cranked but not in the normal ignition position. I have seen this with an old Chrysler. Result is that the engine starts while it is being cranked but stops when you stop cranking.

Or are you saying it runs with your foot flat to the floor but not when you lift your foot? Could it be that the accelerator cable is loose?

Sounds like an immobilizer. Have you got a remote key fob for locking/unlocking the car? If you have, lock the car and wait a few minutes, then unlock and try and start again.

My car does this to me all the time!

Alternator Problems. Your car will start but the alternator won;t kick on and sustain the power so the car shuts down.

possible fuel pump, or fuel filter. if the battery is ok, charges and is charged, then I would go here first. If the fuel pump or filter isn't the case, I would check your spark plugs.
