Sounds like what your looking for is to zoom into the image enough to put the image into the shape and have it look right. By default the shape and the picture would already be separate layers, so you can ignore that answer. If you are looking for the zoom, it goes pretty deep... just click on the toolbar item that looks like a magnifying glass and click to enlarge right click to move away. Or you can use the view menu and zoom in or out.

Hello,
What you can do is create layers. A layer in photoshop is like like components (independent components). Layers comes in order of appearance (top level) For instance,
- Shoes
- Pants
- Shirt
- Body

or in your example.
- Shape
- Image

Therefore, the Shape is ONTOP of the image.

So what do you have to do? It is relatively simple for a beginner to learn. You create two layers. The first layer could be called Shape. And the second layer could be called image.

You PASTE your image in the second layer, and you create your shape in the first layer.

When you write on the first layer, you can see that it is covering ontop of the image. So technically you can draw any shape you want, and make the middle part empty.

Try it :) It is pretty fun and cool.

Good Luck

Have you created a new layer ? If you are selcting the small image in its entirety, then you can paste into a selected shape on the other layer.
