I was walking on my college campus today and saw a black girl in Sperry's (boating shoes). Most girls that wear them aren't black. And this thought popped into my head that they didn't look right on her, I guess because I have never seen another black girl wearing them. Then I thought to myself that I never see black girls in Rainbow flip flops either and don't think that they would look right to me on black people either. I love black people and have black friends, but does it make me racist to think that black people look weird in this mostly white brand?

You recognised that you don't see certain people wearing certain things.

Skin colour is a noticeable trait. We can't actually be colour blind regarding skin colour. We can not make assumptions about personality based on skin colour but we can't force ourselves to be unaware of that which we see.

It doesn't make you racist. You don't hate her or otherwise judge her for wearing those shoes. It just stuck out in your mind. If you saw a girl who is otherwise dressed goth wearing them it would stick out in your mind as well regardless of her skin colour.

It challenges your ideas of societal norms to think she looks weird. Take that as an opportunity to expand your view and learn that it doesn't look weird; unique, maybe, given your experience, but shouldn't we all strive to be unique?

I don't think it makes you racist. There are just some things you've never considered to be associated with blacks. It's never a bad thing keep learning about the world and people around you. Continue to be good to all your friends be they black, white, green or pink and love them and support them.

BTW, I am white and very pale and never wear white because it looks gross on me.

No, just uneducated about fashion. Boating Shoes are a universal item for boating, I could see if you were talking about Applebottoms or Kevin K. These clothing are made pacifically for a body type.

i wear Sperry and im black, just become you cant pretty it doesnt mean it doesnt happen. Having people of other colors reminds you that its for everyone.

Not racist. You just noticed something which was a little out of the ordinary. I don't usually see old white guys wearing FUBU. I would notice that and I wouldn't think I was being racist (or an 'ageist')

Ask Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson. They decide whose racist and whose not.

No you are not racist. We all stereotype others everyday. It is culturally built in. All we can do is try to overcome the automatic tendency to stereotype.

No. It means you have fashion sense. No one should wear Sperry's.

what you were thinking was based on facts as you know them, not on racism. It's OK.
