Check the power steering fluid, it probably needs some, and you'll want to use ATF for it, I forget what kind you need exactly but I use regular store brand kind from Advance Auto on my '91 318is and the '88 325ic as well... I want to say ATF +3 but it could be Dexron / Mercon as well, ask at the store and tell them it's for your power steering, they should be able to help, some persistence in the matter and perhaps a check into some forums might resolve this further.
Best I can think is PDS is like Power on-Demand steering or some such nomenclatural bs, but if your P/S fluid is not low then keep checking all your fluids until you find it, to include brake, and the windshield washer reservoir just in case.
