OK...here is the thing...ferrets are expensive to buy and maintain. The ferret itself is 130 bucks, cage (a proper one) is upwards of 200 dollars, food per bag is 15-20 dollars. This is 350 dollars right there and its not even counting litter pan, water bottle, food dish, hammock, bedding, toys, etc., etc. At some point you will also want to buy another ferret. They really need a buddy to keep them healthy physically and emotionally. Ferrets also tend to have an odor...this odor can be reduced or even eliminated by keeping things VERY clean. Also...being messy is their middle name!

If you read the above and are OK with ALL of it then you may be prepared to be a ferret owner. I suggest doing all the research you can on the little fuzzies before you finally say "OK, this is something I want to do." I suggest checking out the following site. It offers tons of good ferret information: http://www.ferretuniverse.com

Here is a good website for ferret products at a slight discount:

http://www.ferretdepot.com

Good luck in your decision!

First, they are not illegal in the US, just some states do not allow them because they are still considered exotic. Second, yes ferrets do stink, but then again so do dogs if you don't clean them. You have to wash a ferret regularly, or it will start to smell do to it's musk glands. Ferrets are expensive to maintain(some minor vet visits can cost close to $1000) They get sick easily and are affected by human illnesses. Simple things like a cold can put them at risk of death. They require lots of effort and time spent with them. You can't just leave them in a little cage all day like a hamster or Gerbil, they need room to play. They do not chew on wires like rodents, because their teeth do stop growing and it is also possible to potty train them like a cat or do. A lot of states will put the ferret to death if it is found that someone has been bitten by them, so it is not good to have them around small children. Any pet takes a lot of knowledge and attention. Do research before making a buy or you could end up spending $100 or more on something that you really don't want. If you decide you want one, get it from a rescue, not a pet store.

Ferrets are wonderful pets if you are prepared to spend a lot of time with them, and money on their food, bedding and vet bills. I would suggest reading "Ferrets for Dummies" before you obtain a ferret...written by a very knowledgable lady. Also, if after reading that book you decide a ferret is for you, check out your local ferret shelter....there are a lot of babies needing homes because someone didn't do their homework before getting a ferret and then dumped it on the shelter.

Ferrets are legal in all states except California and Hawaii. However, there are a lot of cities that have bans on them....check into your local ordinances or call your local SPCA and they should be able to tell you.

Ferrets are a big responsibility and should not be taken lightly.

Ferrets are good to handle and pretty easy to take care of. But they stink really bad if you don't clean them.
