It was a long war that dragged on for 8 years. Towards the end the war was becoming expensive and was becoming more unpopular in England as they began to realize there would be no quick defeat of the rebellion. The colonies won enough battles to never be decisively defeated and wisely retreated several times. The colonies were a big place for armies to fight and chase each other in, and England was far away across the Atlantic. All the colonies had to do is survive to fight again. Eventually after the British showed signs of growing tired of fighting and appeared vulnerable, the French, who had been giving us financial aid and the historical enemies of the British, came in to support us openly with troops and fighting ships. The British would then have to contend with a serious naval threat to their very long supply lines.

They did keep attacking. There was the War of 1812. Americans also fought guerrilla style during the revolution and the British didn't. Then there was the cotton issue, which America produced and England wanted cotton. During the civil war, the English sided with the south, because of the cotton issue.
