Before 1903, Panama did not exist. It was part of Columbia.
The US supported a group of people who rebelled, and the US recognized the new nation of Panama. 15 days later, the US signed an agreement where the US got rights to the canal zone, and the rights to create and operate the Panama Canal. President Carter signed a treaty that gave the canal back to Panama, which took effect in 2000.

So, he took the canal.
