It sounds silly but the skill to applying make-up is to look like you aren’t wearing any. Your mum is probably concerned that you want to make yourself look older, so instead of going for lots of eyeliner and bright lipstick keep it soft and pretty, and she may even like your new ‘natural’ look. I would start with a tinted moisturiser that contains sunscreen, as you should be wearing a sunscreen everyday anyway – just chose one with a little colour such as Sunsense Daily Face SPF 30+. It has a matte finish so don’t worry about looking too shiny.
Forget about lip liners and lipstick at this stage; just go for a touch of gorgeous gloss such as The Body Shop Born Lippy, $10, which comes in heaps of yummy flavours or The Body Shop Hi-Shine Lip Treatment, $20. Gloss is inexpensive and ridiculously easy to apply – you can’t go wrong.

For your eyes just a sweep of mascara will do wonders, you could even go for a clear mascara, (Australis has a good one), if you want to keep things really natural. Mascara really opens up your eyes; I never leave home without it! I would also start trying to get the hang of blush. See last week’s feature on how to apply it. Blush is a make-up must have, it gives the complexion a lovely healthy glow and enhances your cheekbones. That’s probably all the make-up you need for now, but you’re going to look amazing!

Its fun to play with makeup!! But I don't use it every day.... Honestly, if you don't have acne and have eyelashes, it's not worth the bother. Mascara gets in your eyes and leaves little black specs everywhere. Its a pain to take it all off. Also, studies have proven that constant use of makeup will age the skin around your eyes. Why bother?

But, to get started... have you mum take you to the mall with your friends and leave you guys be. Check out the make-up counter at JC Penny or Macy's or whatever you have. They will help you, make you over, and work with you to find stuff that you want. They will also show you how to apply it. It's a lot like painting sunsets over your eyes, except trying to make it look like you didn't try for that effect. Be prepared to pay out the dough though. Most mascara alone runs about $7 - and to buy the full set of makeup that will cover everything you might want will run you about $50 - $100. Or you can just experiment with some of the products you may see in the local beauty isles. Try to stick with name brands. They are name brands for a reason and work well. Get together with your girlfriends and make a night of it. Have fun!

Okay... how much make up you use is entirely up to you, but i'll tell you everything and you can just pick what you think you need.
Foundation: this is used to cover imperfections in your skin, for example, blemishes, uneven skin tone, that wierd thing you can't get to go away, etc. To apply, smooth on a thin, even layer all over your face and blend into your neck along your jaw line. There is a large variety, but stick works best. You need a color that matches your natural skin tone.
Powder: After you apply your foundation cover your entire face with a thin dusting of a matching powder, the powder sets your foundation and keeps it on all day.
Eye make up: Use colors you like or neutral colors for a natural look. Just smooth some over your lid or e-mail me (october_fallen@yahoo.com) for details on how to do certain styles. Apply your eye liner, pencil or liquid, as close to your lash line as you can. And, the easy part, apply your mascara to your lashes.
Cheeks: You'll need a blush that compliments your natural skin tone. Apply a small amount to the apple of your cheek and in a sweeping motion, pull the brush up towards your temple.
Lips: Simple... gloss or lip stick.
