How would you go about creating a birthing plan, is it something you can create online yourself or something you have to do at the hospital?

I read many of the pregnancy books and wrote out an elaborate plan for what I wanted at various stages during labor. It did give me something to do while I was pregnant besides worrying about the baby. However, nothing went as planned when I went into labor. (My water broke early so I couldn't labor in a tub. Contractions were a lot more painful than I expected after my water broke, so I quickly called the nurses station to change my mind on the epidural. The baby's heart rate was weird so they put me one position and told me not to move. The baby wouldn't decend, so they did a c-section.)
If I got pregnant again I would still make a plan but now I know flexibility is key.

a birthing plan is the way to go! My daughter was taken away and put under a warm light.. the nurses took over before I got to hold her. They gave her a bottle, when I wanted to breastfeed... You can do them online. Google it and you will find some great sites to help you out. Congraduations and good luck. If you dont' have a plan, you may be dissapointed as I was with my first few hours with the baby

Well, get one of those pregnancy guides, like "What to Expect When You're Expecting", they will have examples in there for you.

However, unless you are planning a home birth, or have a midwife, don't expect an ob/gyn to conform strictly to what you want. They are going to do what is safest for mom and baby. Sad to say, they practice defensive medicine because they are afraid of getting sued.

I'm sorry, that was a lot more information than you asked for :) Good luck!

A lot of hospitals (primary doctor or delievering doctor) actually is become acustomed to having birthing plans Or stated ideas to which what is allowed or disallowed during labor and birthing process.

Major things are: family relatives/friends present v.s not present.

Religious

Quietness and calm

Not allowing newborn to leave the room unless emergancy situation.

Plan of birthing vaginally or c-section situations.

I think it is something that both do at home and discuss it with the primary doctor and visit to the hospital for more in depth explaining.

My husband and I will have one ourselves as we have expectations that will allow us to be comfortable during our stay, than stressed and speaking our minds.

this is a good place to start, and add anything that would be pertinent to your specific hospital or situation.
bring your birthplan with you to your next OB/GYN appointment and go over it with your doctor or midwife, some of the things you want may not be offered by your hospital or they may offer services you didn't even think of.
Also, have them put a copy of your birth plan in your records beforehand, and pack a copy in your bag to take with you to the hospital. And plan on having to remind them what you want, the more you know what you want, the easier it is to relay it to the staff.
Just don't expect everything to go exactly according to plan, birth is unpredictable. I had my birthing plan full of techniques I wanted for relaxation during the long labor, and positions I wanted to try. What ended up happening was I got to the hospital, got checked by the doctor who told me it would be awhile and she was gonna go tend to other patients. ten minutes later my water breaks, baby crowns, doctor runs in and I start pushing; 14 minutes later my son is born. so much for relaxation
know what you want but be flexible and good luck.

Go to http://birthplan.com

It can format a plan for you based on you picking out different options, or at least give you a good idea of what to do.

Good luck!
