And why would any starship store antimatter pods if the ships main drive is run off of dilithium crstyals? I understand the antimatter is stored away from the core unit (for safety reasons) but how are dilithium crystals and antimatter related?

Thanks.

i understand it's a science fiction show, the question was in relation to the Star Trek world....thanks.

Dilithium crystals are not a source of energy. They FOCUS the energy of the matter/anti-matter reaction, providing high-energy plasma to the ship's power systems.

Matter and anti-matter are injected into the reaction chamber which contains the crystals, and the crystals are used to regulate and channel the resulting reaction.

The Warp Core is where all of this takes place. The core itself is both physically and magnetically shielded to contain the reaction.

the more Captain K. wanted, Scotty would induce the influce of gama controlled exhaust pressure, resulting in power of warp 10 to be used for a very short amount of time, power curve would have to be measured by

usage x diration x speed, any excess out damage the cystals and Spock would have to look at Kirk funny and that would make Scotty very upset, an away team would have to be sent to a world no one has been thought to have been, a new crew member would have to die when beamed down, Spock would have to speak in a single toned voice, Scotty yelling the ship is drifting into the pull of the world gravity pull.

At the last possible moment, the new cystals would be installed and the Enterprise would speed off at warp factor 4.

short answer = as much as the writer needs to be used or if the ship has to break down without outer damage to the ship.

It's a science fiction thing.
You think up something that sounds really neat, throw enough logic and associated facts and technical terms together, ignore the real world physics requirements, and then you can support sustained matter-antimatter reactions safely except when the story line requires a crisis in the engine room.

We diabolocally diluted the dilithium crystals with dihedral diamond faced diodes and directed them diurnally to divert our path through space.

Star Trek technology is not based of any real technical designs. Things work because they do, and don't ask questions.
