How can gun control really work? The people who would obey the new laws wouldn't be breaking the law in the first place. Criminals don't follow the law anyway. The countries with strong gun control in place have higher crime rates. We have laws about drugs and we still have drug trade and abuse. Its easier to rob people if you know you, the criminal, are the only one with a gun.

I always love the line " They won't be coming into your house and taking them." Tell that to the people of Canada, Australia, Japan, and England.

Australian Gun Law Update

Here's a thought to warm some of your hearts...
From: Ed Chenel, A police officer in Australia

Hi Yanks, I thought you all would like to see the real figures from Down
Under. It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were
forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by
our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500
million dollars.

The first year results are now in:

Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent,

Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent ;

Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!

In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300
percent.

(Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals
did not - and the criminals still possess their guns!)

While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in
armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12
months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.

There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the
elderly, while the resident is at home.

Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has
decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in
"successfully ridding Australian society of guns." You won't see this on
the American evening news or hear your governor or members of the State
Assembly disseminating this information.

The Australian experience speaks for itself. Guns in the hands of honest
citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only
the law-abiding citizens.

Take note Americans, before it's too late!

Guns are only designed to kill innocent people indescriminantly! If the general public has access to guns, they will start to show up in childrens toy boxes and people will start killing their neighbors for no reason because a chemical in the gun powder makes them go crazy! Have we become so barbaric that we place the innocent victim above violent criminals? Isn't everybody created equal? I think that if a criminal is so messed up that the only enjoyment they can get comes from shooting people, and if they go to all the trouble of getting a gun illegally, how can we be so selfish as to not allow them that one pleasure in life? Criminals should no longer have to fear traveling out of their strict gun control states. Pro gun states have low violent crime because they discriminate against innocent criminals. Now on a serious note, I think it should be illegal for all law makers who oppose guns to own a gun, or to employ a body guard who carries one. It would just be a bad example to law abiding citizens who might emulate them.
If guns were totally illegal, it would limit the total amount of guns, making them less accessable to criminals to obtain illegally. Guns are too complicated to make, and won't be circulated like drugs that have no complicated chemistry to them at all. I mean, how many criminals are going to discover that for a few bucks, you can make a single-shot shotgun by everyday parts from the hardware store? Do any of them read things like the "Anarchist Cookbook"? I doubt it. Criminals are really just good people who are misunderstood.

Gun control doesn't work

It makes citizens who are concerned about obeying the laws criminals and leaves criminals with all the guns loose on the citizens.

It's also a form of government control. If the government takes away your rights to bear arms, then there is no defense against a corrupt government...look at Germany before WW11.

Criminals don't make their own gun. They still need to get it from someone who buys it. Idea is that there will be less guns overall on street. That would make it less likely a criminal would have a gun since there are less guns to go around.

Tighter laws/crack down can help to get guns away from criminals. Plus having higher crime rate may be the reason those countries put in strong gun control. I don't think can prove which is causing which. Can you?

So you think we shouldn't have laws on drugs? On property? Since no one can stop thieves for 100%. Sure, why not just let them have it.

People still can buy assault rifles and 50 caliber rifles so far. I don't see what you're worrying about. They're not going to come into your house and take your gun. It will be little more hassel to get one.

Gun control clearly does work. It does exactly what it is intended to do--disarm the peaceful population leaving them at the mercy of violent ARMED criminals. When crime rates soar, government will ask people to give up more liberty so the police can better protect them. And people, the sheep that they are, will gleefully agree.
The policy "expects" and political powers that be do not believe gun control will actually reduce crime (they aren't that stupid, they just act like they are). They know exactly what they are doing.

Monkey Pie,
You are an idiot. What the hell is your property analogy supposed to mean? No lows on property because we can't stop theft? What?!?!? Your straw man argument is typical of mental midgets. People's right to possess a firearm has nothing in common with any of your alleged analogies. The way to reduce crime is through tough justice that includes restitution.
Perhaps you'd care to enlighten us as to where gun control laws have had any positive effect (for the people, not for the tyrannical governments that insisted upon their passage).

For the rest of you, here's an obvious fact: criminals don't wait in line. They don't "cool off" and are unconcerned with license requirements. If someone it intent on doing me harm, I have a right to defend myself. If I choose to purchase a gun to ensure my safety, who is the state to tell me I have to wait? What a cruel, pro-criminal policy!

No. Gun Control will not work. It never has, and it never will. More law-abiding citizens arming themselves is the answer.

You answered your own question. Gun control will not work because those who would honor the gun control laws aren't the ones causing the problems now. Those who are causing the problems now would not honor the gun control laws.
