I have a really bad habit of biting my nails. I usually only did it when I was nervous or stressed, but lately i've been biting them a lot. Does anyone have any ideas or tricks to help me stop biting them? I want longer nails but I just can't stop biting my nails.

You can get "stop biting" nail polish to put on your nails at any store that sells nail polish. It is a clear polish that tastes very bad. Put it on your nails, and the taste will remind you not to put your nails in your mouth! The main disadvantage is that the bad taste can affect food you eat with your hands (like sandwiches) too.

You can get the stuff you paint on that makes your nails taste yucky. My mom tried that with my brother when we were little. Over Thanksgiving, this year, he made some really funny faces showing how he would suffer the taste in order to still bite them off.

I'd actually suggest dealing with it like breaking any habit. First, simply try not to. When you have the urge wait 5 minutes and try to find something to distract yourself with. If you feel you still need to wait another 5 minutes. If you can't resist the urge then, at least, don't punish yourself for failing. Just keep trying, allow yourself setbacks (you are, still, human), and try to go a little longer next time. If you bite of one nail try to leave the rest. Maybe keep a nail file with you and file them when you have the urge to bite. When you have put effort into making them look nice it won't be as easy to bite them off. Plus it could actually substitute as a nervous habit.

My friend had the same problem and recently I noticed she wasn't biting them thanks to a tip she heard. She said that if you apply nail polish remover to your fingernails, especially the tips, let it dry. And the next time you bring it to your mouth, you'll immediately taste some sort of bitterness (I personally do not know what it tastes like) which will, I guess, stop you and eventually break you down from the habit until it is no longer an annoying habit.

There is this nailpolish at any drug store in the nail section, will run you a few bucks. Polish your nails everyday! I put it on my daughters who bit their nails all the time...it worked like magic...they said it tasted like earwax! Question is how did they know what earwax tasted like..Yuck!
