why do we spend public monies on maintaining memorials to those that have died in order to preserve and spread our way of life? Should we no longer fund these projects?

Great point ! I really hope the your latter comment never happens, I would go berserk after seeing friends brothers comrades die and maimed for our country.

We may not have moral superiority over other people, but those men and women have fought hard to preserve the ideals of freedom and (semi) democracy that we love. Money should absolutely be spent on maintaining their memorials. It's the very least we can do. Without those ideals, you'd get shot for even thinking to question the government's spending.
