Every time my buddy starts his lap top he gets a svchost.exe error. I am familiar with it, so I checked the registry editor for it. Turns out, he has some program that deletes files in registry folders... so I assume it remover the svchost file and left the rest in the run folder. I also wonder if it's binded to Internet Explorer or in some dll file. It does not show up in virus scans in safe mode either. Any ideas?

I'm not able to reformat. There are files on the lap top that my friend is required by the military to have.

I know it can be taken care of, I fixed it then it came back. I've never seen a problem so complex. I'm not sure it is a virus at this point, but if it is, I really admire the effort that must have been put into creating it.

So, any Ideas?

I've tried RegCure, virus removal in safe mode, disabling user mode driver, and looking in the registry files manually.

Thanks for any ideas.

To all whom it may concern: To get rid of svchost.exe error 0x745f2780

go to control panel then go to automatic updates. TURN AUTOMATIC UPDATES OFF. this fixes it for some reason. I'm not sure what causes the problem. However, as long as it's not active.. I'm happy.

svchost.exe -- application error the instruction at "0x745f2780" reference memory at "0x00000000". the memory could not be 'read'

Once this error is closed you can't start anything - and XP crashes when trying to shut down.

Fortunately, if you don't close any of the error messages down, windows still works.

Using google I found this solution by Scott Swigart (see the 2nd solution) - Thanks a million Scott!!!

"
1.Go 2 the start menu
2.Right click "my computer"
3.Click "properties" then the "automatic updates" tab
4.Choose "turn off automatic updates"
5.Reboot your computer
6.Go back to start menu and in all programs go to "windows update" you have to be connected to the internet.
7.Manually update windows.
8.Turn your automatic updates back on.

I have also had a number of people comment that the problem reappears after some time. The recommended fix, if the problem reappears, is to turn off automatic updates, and just manually go to Windows Update periodically and update your machine.
