Example, cd-r mean you can only record once on this disc and a cd+r mean you can record more than once? The same with Dvd-rw, what do the minus and the plus signs mean?

nope, you can only write once on both -R and +R CD's/DVD's.

They are just different standards I think, for example -R's might work better on a specific drive, it's all up to taste really and what works for you and you're CD/DVD burner/reader.

-RW on the other hand is different. Means you can write more than once.

There is no such thing as CD+R or CD+RW. There are a number of different DVD formats, including DVD+R and DVD+RW, but so far CDs only have -R and -RW. CD formats with a '+' in them (except for CD+G, which only defines the subcode channels of an audio CD) are usually typographical errors.

+ and - are different types. RWs are those you can write and rewrite (repeatedly) Rs are write once only. This is true for both CD and DVD blanks
